Finding "At-Home" Ways to Demonstrate Kindness and Empathy.

In the time of social distancing, students in V-Horwitz are finding ways to demonstrate wonderful acts of kindness and empathy.

They started their study of empathy with their literature studies in the fall. This year, they read Front Desk, a novel about immigrants from China and the challenges and obstacles they faced coming to America. Adopting an empathetic viewpoint helps one better understand their plight.

The study continues with TOAD classes geared towards identifying when we need empathy, how we give it, and what it can look like. This is especially true for the V-Horwitz class study of food insecurity in Massachusetts. By this point in the year, students can tie it into anything they are working on.

Though they are now practicing empathy from home, students and teachers still found ways to share messages of hope, kindness, and encouragement. Their assignment this week:
  1. Share acts of kindness with their neighbors while respecting social distancing
  2. Take a picture of the chosen act
  3. Write what they did, and how it made them feel
