Marina von Neumann Whitman '49 Reads From New Book

Marina von Neumann Whitman of Shady Hill's Class of 1949 was was a guest speaker at Shady Hill on Wednesday, October 2.
This morning, we were delighted to welcome Marina von Neumann Whitman '49 to read from her book The Martian's Daughter: A Memoir, published by University of Michigan Press. A group of alumni, current and former SHS parents, faculty, and friends gathered in the Assembly Hall for the reading.

Head of School Mark Stanek introduced Ms. Whitman, a Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. The title of her book refers to her father, John von Neumann, who was a key figure in the Manhattan Project, the inventor of game theory, the developer of the modern stored-program electronic computer, and an advisor to the US military in the 1940s and 1950s.

Ms Whitman, herself, has had a distinguished and varied career, serving as an academic; writing about globalization before the term ever came into being; being the first woman to serve on the President's Council of Economic Advisors; and becoming a high-ranking executive in the American auto industry.

After Ms. Whitman's fascinating reading and comments, the audience asked her questions about the current state of the American economy, the influence of other mentors in her life, the evolution of women's roles in our society, and how best to encourage young women, such as Shady Hill's own Middle School students, to take up professions in STEM disciplines.
