Author/Illustrator Oge Mora Visits the Lower School

“Some people might call it a stray mark. But if you’re playful and imaginative, you can turn a ‘mistake’ into something amazing.”
Providence-based author and collage artist Oge Mora invited a Kindergartener to make a mark on the easel paper. Then she asked the group to brainstorm ideas about how the mark could be turned into a picture of something. “A chair!” A barn door!” “A timer!” “Someone sleeping!” On the spot and to the students’ delight, Oge happily turned the stray mark into a drawing that incorporated ALL the suggestions.
At Friday morning's Lower School Assembly, Oge spoke about her journey of becoming a professional artist. “I started when I was about your age, and I worked at it for years.” Then in the library, she talked with Kindergarteners and first-graders about how she turns her art into books.
