Look Inside

Physical Education

At Shady Hill, the student’s Physical Education comprises a sequential program that is a vital component of their physical, cognitive, and affective development. We believe in the primacy of exploration, the mastery of skills, and the development of character. Through innovative approaches, we cultivate joyful active participants who value physical activity and play.

  • Teaches skills necessary to enjoy and participate in lifelong activities.
  • Empowers children to make wise choices, demonstrate responsible behavior, and advocate for fairplay.
  • Provides a supportive environment in which every child is challenged to grow, take healthy risks, learn from mistakes, and persevere.
  • Fosters appreciation for individual differences and encourages children to see personal growth in self and others.
  • Promotes cooperation and teamwork.
The Physical Education program begins with Movement Education in the earliest Lower School grades and continues with appropriate social, conceptual, and physical skill development during the Grade III, IV, and V Physical Education programs. Grades VI, VII, and VIII students may choose to take part in the School’s athletics program or participate in the physical education elective program. We offer thirteen different athletics programs and aim to provide electives in yoga, fitness, dance, sports & games, and racket sports at different times of the school year. Both of these programs combine students in grades VI, VII, and VIII, creating more cross-grade opportunities for deeper peer connections.
