Shady Hill Begins Centennial Celebration on May 2, 2015
To begin the celebration of Shady Hill's 100th birthday, we returned to its roots at 16 Quincy Street in Cambridge: nearly 150 people attended the dedication of a plaque at the first location of the school on Saturday, May 2.
Guests were welcomed my music performed by cellist Raven Whyles ’14 and violinist Taylor Payne. Head of School Mark Stanek welcomed everyone and began the dedication by reflecting on the school’s earliest days and on how the vision, mission, and educational philosophy articulated by Ernest and Agnes Hocking and the other founding parents still resonates throughout the school today.
After his comments, a chorus of 13 readers, made up of alumni, faculty, and students, read excerpts from May Sarton’s I Knew a Phoenix, painting a vivid picture of Shady Hill’s earliest years. (Click here for a copy of the reading.) Sarton was an alumna of the Class of 1926.

When the ceremony ended, the crowd headed back to the school's current campus on Coolidge Hill in Cambridge. Some went by bus, but a number made their way back by walking in a parade along the Charles River. Back at school, the guests were treated to a picnic lunch on the Green.
