Thinking About May Day

  • For many years, students in all grades planted flowers around their buildings in anticipation of May Day. The school revived the tradition on the occasion of its 80th and 90th birthdays in 1995 and 2005.
  • From 1940 to 1963, Beginners wore bunny suits  and hopped on the Green at the start of May Day.
  • Other traditional May Day dances have included a sailboat dance, square dancing, Chinese dragon dance, and jitterbug dancing.
  • May Day was held on Fridays until 1962.
  • In the early years, May Day was only for students and teachers. Parents began to be invited to May Day in 1946.
